Feeding your parrot with good food is very important. Only the good and balanced feed can make your parrot healthy and long living. Fulfilling the nutritional requirements of your pet parrot is crucial. Most of the pet parrot owners are not well informed about parrot’s diet and as a result, several pet parrots usually die at a young age due to either malnutrition or related diseases.

The parrot birds are the birds of the wild, who like to eat whatever they want to. They eat what they get in the season. Their diet mainly includes seeds, fruits, insects and any other thing that they get. With a good and balanced diet, parrots take a proper and balanced amount of amino acids, carbohydrates, fats, protein, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

Parrot seed is a good source of nutrition but they are not balanced diet. Seeds are made naturally for parrots and their ingredients are not harmful in any way. But the parrot must not be made a seed junkie, giving only the seed diet.

Vitamins and minerals are particularly very important constituents in the parrot’s diet to make it maintain good health in the long term. Due to the lack of vitamins and minerals, there can be many deficiency diseases in your parrot. Vegetables with Vitamin A are one of the key foods that you can give your parrot to eat. Also, there are several vegetables that have a high content of vitamin A such as green leafy vegetables.

Parrot should also intake Vitamin D, which is one of the fat soluble vitamins. You should provide your parrot enough sunlight, egg-yolks, fish liver oil and dark leafy greens that are the best source of Vitamin D. Vitamin E also plays an important role to conserve the bodily functions and fertility of your parrot. It promotes the whole metabolism of the bird with carbohydrate, fatty, mineral, protein and water metabolic processes. Vitamin E can be given either naturally or in powder or tablets.

The feeding habits of imported parrots are a little different than other parrots, for example the African species, such as African Grey Parrots and Senegal Parrots. The African Grey Parrot mainly feeds on nuts and fruits and leafy matter in addition. They should be given about 3 to 4 teaspoons of pellet or seed based diet daily. The Senegal parrot needs about 2 to 3 teaspoons of pellet or seed based fortified diet daily. About 5 to 10% of its diet should include bite size fruits and veggies. Both the parrots should be given distilled water.

To keep the food of parrot safe and dust proof, the parrot owners need seed storage containers. They are important for you if you want to feed your parrots properly. There are several types of seed containers available in the market, such as, metal, wood, ceramic, glass or plastic seed containers. Different seed containers have different qualities. You can select the one as per your choice. For best results, you should store the unused seed in a water resistant seed container.
