Plum Heads

Plum heads Parakeet, scientifically called Psittacula cyanocephala is a parrot, is a resident breeder bird of South East Asia, primarily India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Plum heads Parakeet is a bird of forest and open woodland. Living in holes in trees, it even takes part in local movements, determined primarily by the accessibility to the fruit and blossoms that make up its food. Bhutan, Sierra Leone and Sri Lanka have issued stamps portraying the Plum heads Parakeet

The Plum Headed Parakeet is one of just three parakeet species that is found extensively throughout India. Plum Heads is considered widely as one of the most beautiful birds in its genus. It has been seen in captivity since 397 B.C.

Plum heads is a green parrot, which is 33 cm long and tail about 22 cms. The head of the male is red. It has purple and blue color on the back of the crown, nape and cheeks. There is a red shoulder patch and the rump and tail are bluish-green, the latter tipped white. The upper jowl is orange yellow colored and the lower mandible is comparatively dark. Narrow black neck collar and a black chin stripe can also be seen. The different head color and the white tip to the tail distinguish the species from the similar blossom-headed Parakeet or Psittacula roseata.

The female Plum heads has a grey head and corn-yellow upper mandible. She lacks the black neck collar chin stripe and red shoulder patch as the male. The younger immature Plum heads have a green head and both mandibles are yellow in color.

Plum heads Parakeet is a sociable and noisy bird with a range of raucous calls. However, this species is not browbeaten as heavily as the sympatric Alexandrine Parakeet. However, their population is reduced in urban areas and intensely inhabited zones.

As a pet bird, the Plum Headed Parakeet is excellent. They are intelligent and most of them learn to talk easily. At times, you can also teach some of them several phrases. However, they are not as good in talking as the other large parrots are, such as the African Grey. The main reason behind it is that they may be shy as they first enter your home, but give them some time and have patience.

Plum heads should also be well socialized to other people as it helps to make them feel comfortable around others. They are usually considered as quiet birds in comparison to some other parrots. They make a pretty melodic call mostly when they are resting. You may find your bird to be more active when it is kept in an aviary, while it may be inert when they are held in a cage. You may notice them making shrill noises when they are living in an aviary.

Special care should be given to Plum heads to protect them from cold. They will be happier if you provide them with toys and safe branches to let them amuse themselves. As a nutritious diet, it is important to give them raw vegetables. Carrots and other vegetables are full of natural enzymes.
