Parrots are really special creatures. Besides their beautiful look and interesting activities, parrots can also speak like humans. Parrots are perhaps most famous for their speaking ability to imitate different sounds as they hear them. Sometimes they are too perfect in speaking that you might find it difficult to tell the difference between a parrot’s "hello" and the "hello" of a human.
Parrots are among the most intelligent creatures and aviculturists consider them as the companion birds, who have the ability to do well in complex communication also. Parrots are social creatures who want to interact, entertain and be entertained themselves.
How parrots can speak is still an intense subject of many studies. Unlike the humans, parrots do not have vocal cords. As humans use the vibrations of the vocal cords to speak and our tongue and lips to make words, parrots don’t do this. The human vocal cords are located in the larynx and parrots also have a larynx. But their speech is not made in the same way.
The parrots know how they can control the movement of their muscles in the throat. They have the ability to direct the airflow in a special way to reproduce special tones and sounds and even human sounds.
The parrots’ ability to understand or speak human language can be very worthful in the wild. In the safe environment of our homes, a parrot learns to mimic our voice for the most part when the sound is interesting to him and catches its attention. This is why shouting at a naughty parrot will do more harm for you as you are giving him what it seeks—attention.
It is said that some parrots can learn to speak as many as 50 words. They are excellent mimics, who do not understand what they mimic. If your pet parrot says ‘hello’ as you enter, it may say the same thing when you leave. The speaking parrots need to be given careful training, to make them speak, sing and whistle. The parrots speak but not in the same sense as the humans do. Their speaking is merely to repeat sounds as they hear.
It is interesting to teach your parrot to talk. Much like a human child, your parrot can make unclear noises at the beginning of his training schedule and can learn to develop words. It can be interesting for you to know that the more you expose the parrot to, the more language they will learn and repeat.
The best way to teach your parrot is to repeat words or phrases to make sure that your bird may mimic your voice. Start teaching your parrot talking when it is 4 to 6 months old. Try with simple 'Good morning' term at the beginning of each day. Better keep in mind that some parrots may pick up words fast or late than others. You can also choose a tape recorder or a prerecorded CD to give them real scientific training. Parrots may speak something unwanted and offensive too, so be aware!
