Parrot Basics

Parrots are beautiful, colorful, attractive and entertaining pets to own. They are wonderful companions for humans. They can chirrup, they can speak and they can entertain you from their activities. Their outstanding qualities make them an ideal choice as pet for the bird lovers. But before you keep a parrot with you as your pet, there are a few important things about them for you to understand.

Many bird lovers buy parrots on impulse from pet stores, which is not right. You have to prepare your self before you buy parrot as pet. There are many species of parrots and each bird is a different individual. You should understand parrots before making them a part of your life.

Amazons, Budgies, Cockatoos, Lovebirds, Macaws and Parrot lets are considered good as pets. All species look different and have their own goods and bads. A few parrot species share some features and qualities also.

Some parrots are very loud and some have no real ability to shout. Before deciding upon a certain species, consider your tolerance for noise. Most of the healthy parrots are vocal parrot, who love to talk and sing. You cannot punish them for talking or screeching as they have to be treated as a child.

You have to keep your pet parrot happy. Try to understand their behavior, what they want to tell you. Parrots are very intelligent birds and can tune with human’s emotions. If you are a stressed out person your parrot will also be a stressed bird that screams most of the time. But if you are happy peppy your bird will also be active and playful.

Feeding the pet parrot is very important. A parrot has to be given a balanced diet. You can not feed it only by seed. If you do not give your parrot a balanced diet, it causes illness and short life span due to malnutrition. While feeding, the parrots love to throw a one third of their food on the floor of the cage. Moreover, in a home where parrot lives, you will find feathers and droppings fallen everywhere. A pet parrot makes sweeping a part of your daily routine.

Parrots need space and not a little of it but lots of it. They can not live in a cage in which they cannot open up their wings and take a flight. A cage has to be roomy, allowing your pet parrot a free life though in capture. Both small and large parrots are lively, playful, and inquisitive. They need space to eat, rest, climb, pull out their wings, look smart and play with their toys. A 15 inches sq. cage can be said to be ideal for a medium sized parrot.

Parrots require attention as they are social animals. You cannot leave a Parrot alone in a cage for a long period of time as they can be depressed, lazy and wary animal. Parrots prosper when they get attention. They must get love and attention every day whether you love it or not.
