Yellow Faced Parrot

The Yellow faced Parrot or Salvatoria xanthops is the only species of the genus Salvatoria. It is found in Brazil and also in Bolivia at times. Earlier the parrot belonged to the genus Amazona and was called the Yellow faced Amazon. But after some recent researches, these species are held more related to the short tail Parrot and to the other parrots of the genus Pionus.

Yellow faced parrot are the rarest and largest species of parrotlet. They weigh 50 grams and are about six inches in length. The Yellow faced parrots are found in eastern Brazil at the cerrado in low numbers. Unfortunately, they are declining and from, some areas they are already disappeared in the large areas of the earlier range.

The Yellow faced Parrot is classified vulnerable because of rapid devastation of its cerrado and caatinga habitat and also some semi nomadic habits that make it hard to protect.

Yellow faced parrot are similar in markings to Pacifics. Both males and females have blue on the wings, rumps, backs and eye streaks. In males, it is deep, dark blue violet and in females it is lighter and brighter blue. The male Yellow faced parrot have rich violet blue primaries and secondaries alike the male Pacifics, such as, the blue eye streak. Females also feature blue rumps that have light color than the males.

As their name connotes, both male and female parrots have bright yellow faces, foreheads, cheeks, chins, chests and bellies. They have horn color legs and beaks with a dark band running down on the forepart of the upper beak.

Hand fed Yellow faced parrots make wonderful pets. They will quickly become members of your family. As they are very intelligent, they can be often trained to do many tricks. You can also teach them to talk. If you keep a single Yellow Faced parrot as pet, it will make best pet for you.

Clever and fearless, these queer little parrots can get into trouble when you leave them at their own, unsupervised. Parrotlets are defensive and can attack other pets, especially other pet birds, if they get the opportunity. If you can not keep only them in the household, they should be separated physically from other birds and pets for their own protection.

Being very active birds, Yellow faced parrots should be given a good deal of best quality fuel. Gram for gram, they eat more, even more than a cockatiel and even some little conure. You should provide them not only a large amount of food and also a wide variety. A fresh high, quality seed or pellet diet is necessary.

If you feed Yellow faced parrots seeds or pellets, they still need fresh fruits, vegetables and greens daily. It is good to provide some amounts of sunflower and hemp seed also. They bloom on a basic diet comprising of fresh fruits, vegetables, greens, sprouted seed, whole wheat bread, rice, pasta, potatoes and dried beans. Fresh water, minerals and cuttlebone should be available with them all times.
