Red Bellied Parrot

The Red Bellied parrot is an attractive, small sized parrot native to Ethiopia, Tanzania, Somalia and Africa. It is said that Red Bellieds are originated from Tanzania. They belong to the same genus as the BrownHead, Meyers and Senegal.

Red Bellied parrot is a 9” parrot, but if you have a closer look, you will see they are a short tailed parrot, which makes a good part of the 9 inches, body. The typical weight of a Red Bellied parrot is 140 grams with some increase to reach about 170 grams. Sometimes, it may even reach a petite 130 grams. On the whole, it is a stocky and brawny looking little bird.

Red Bellied parrot is sexually dimorphic in the genus. However, the distinction may not be reliable with the babies. Feathers of the adult cock bird will have a beautiful orange color to red chest area whereas the hen is greener and grey with a hint of orange wash. The babies’ plumage may resemble any sex, based on the single pairs of birds.

The males are gray on the back with olive in their wings. They have a brilliant red belly, neck and forehead and lime green stockings on legs. The irises of eyes are red. The bird can change them in width at will, as per the level of interest of the bird in what it is looking at.

The Red Bellied parrot of both sexes has red eyes. They look eerie at the first sight, but as you have it in your home and become used to it, it looks quite striking. As pets, the Red Bellieds are quiet birds, making them quite suitable to the living conditions of apartment.

Red Bellieds can be quite good talkers. Their voice is not of quality as of the African Greys, but with the voice that they have, they can have an extensive vocabulary. The female Red Bellieds can speak as good as the males can.

While playing Red Bellieds look interesting players. They consider most of things as toys. You can see your young Red Bellied playing on its back in the bottom of the cage with just nothing. In that regard, they are very clownish. They can even play with themselves by hanging, upside down by one toe from a perch or swing on curtains.

Red Bellied parrots should be provided with a varied diet, comprising of a seed mix with safflower and several fresh fruits and vegetables. The developed diets should only be given as add on and not as only food. Red-Bellied parrots enjoy several fruits and vegetables, such as, apples, bananas, green beans, carrots, corn, peas, parsley, spinach, fresh peppers, oranges, and more. You can feed them all vegetables fresh or frozen, but not canned. Always be aware of avocados, as they can be toxic for your bird.

The minimum cage a Red Bellied parrot should have is a 20 x 20 cage. However, the larger the cage the better it is for your bird.
